Susan A. Hancock

I do traditional individual, family, and marriage counseling. However, as an autism mom, I specialize in working with families coping with disabilities, particularly autism caregivers and burnout. I have been involved with the DFW special-needs community for more than 25 years, and my clients quickly realize that I’ve been in the trenches and have first-hand experience. I “get” where they are coming from! I am one of few counselors in the area familiar with autism-based Child-to-Parent Aggression (CPA), Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and I’m a Certified Anger Management Specialist.

My primary modality is psychodynamic in nature - getting to the root of the issue. I also have experience working with CBT, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Gottman, Narrative, and Person-Centered therapies, among others. My clients find me very down to earth, authentic, and easy to talk to.

I am a strong believer in meeting clients “where they are,” rather than bombarding them with inspirational quotes and false positivity. Genuine concern, listening and empathy is the beginning of true hope. I help clients figure out what is really going on, and help them come up with their own plan - which is usually much more realistic and successful.
